Kara Walker’s A Subtlety

For Kara Walker's A Subtlety — her monumental sugar-coated sphinx and candy processional figurines installed in Williamsburg's abandoned Domino Sugar Factory in Summer 2014 — I created the complete visual identity. I treated the extended title as a single typographic block, with a refined rendering of 'a Subtlety' that became the work's shorthand. The clean black-on-white system was anchored by my silhouette icon of the factory and smoke plume, which played against the crumbling industrial setting.

Identity | Experiential | Invitation

For the Creative Time Spring Benefit honoring Kara Walker, I built on the visual identity of the exhibition for the save-the-date and invitation. The save-the-date evoked the industrial environment of the site, while the invitation served as a counterpoint.
